Grey’s Anatomy – Episode 5-3 Review

Ladies and Gentlemen, Grey’s Anatomy is in the building!! That’s right people Grey’s is back! It’s Back! So. Freaking. Back. It was the perfect blend of quirky, heartbreaking, cute, dramatic and funny that we’ve come to know and love but missed for the last 2 seasons!

So the main problem this week was all in the title: “Here Comes The Flood”. Apparently SGH hasn’t had a proper building inspection in a while (or perhaps the building inspectors found Meredith’s tequila supply) because suddenly the plumbing is leaking and causing the ceiling to crack and even fall down…into a patients open stomach! Because Seattle Grace needed another reason to be number 12! This week the patients are cancer girl, bad luck guy and nose dude. More specifically, a young woman dying of cancer who’s so desperate for some happiness that she’s actually asking Meredith to whine about her problems, a guy who thinks god is out to get him because he’s the unluckiest person alive – which he actually might be since he’s the one the ceiling fell on in -, and a man who has nerve damage in his nose but who’s only real purpose in this episode is to bring on the tears when he talks about his dead wife (another brilliant guest star performance and it’s only the second episode, do you hear that Emmy people?!)

Now for our favorite dysfunctional family:

The Chief: He’s still acting like a petulant child who’s just had his favorite toy taken away, only the Chief’s favorite toy was being a #1 teaching hospital, and he wants it back. Though I must admit I’m liking his big speeches this season! This episode’s speech was actually right on the mark in terms of what’s wrong with the hospital: basically, no favouritism, nepotism, pessimism or masochism (okay so I just added that last one in because anyone that chooses to listen to Meredith whine 24/7 has to have some serious pain issues!). I’m just not so sure his oh-so-capable staff is up to the challenge – we’ll just have to wait and see!

Meredith/Derek: Okay so I’m seriously considering calling Shonda and asking her where she put our McDreamy! Because seriously what is up with him lately?! Not even asking but telling his clingy, needy, just-beginning-to-heal girlfriend that she has to make her roommates – aka the only family she’s ever really had – move out as soon as he moves in? That is not the sweet, caring Derek Christopher Shepherd we know and love! I’m actually pretty proud of Mer for growing a pair and refusing to make her roomies move out, maybe there is something to that therapy thing!

Alex/Izzie: Things are slowly but surely heating up with these two, but they don’t even know it yet. Alex Karev has a soft side, we know it, and he knows it and Izzie used to know it but the way he’s been treating her lately I wouldn’t blame her if she thinks he’s evil spawn! Between his parade of whores and nastily shooting down her idea of living together – since they thought Mer was kicking them out – Alex leaves Izzie feeling like she’s got nobody. Aw Iz you have people, don’t be sad! Seriously even us Callie-lovers don’t want to see you so depressed! However we lucky viewers did get to see the softer side of Karev in this episode as he told his patient – bad luck guy – just how unlucky he himself is, while looking wistfully at Izzie. Oh yeah it is so on!

Mark/Lexie/George: Well well well, something interesting this way comes with these three! Lexie is still fawning over George at this point, doing his bidding and even giving up surgery to help Bambi with his pile of work, however he’s still totally oblivious to her affections. Sloan on the other hand seems to be taking quite a liking to the younger Grey. He actually talks to her like a human being – which is rare for Mark when it comes to interns – and at the end they have a scene at the bar which is definitely flirty with a capitol ‘F’. I predict that soon enough O’Malley will be the last thing on Lexipedia’s brain! Speaking of the bumbly, awkward one, this episode George finally got to retake his failed intern test; now we’ll have to wait and see if he can finally rejoin the rest of the fab five as a resident!

Christina/Dr Wyatt – aka Team Meredith: This episode featured the return of everyone’s favorite therapist Dr Wyatt, played by the fabulous Amy Madigan. Even though Meredith foolishly quits therapy at the beginning of the episode, much to Wyatt’s chagrin, I’m not sure this will be the last we see of her. In addition to Mer being far from healed I’m thinking that maybe just maybe it’ll be BFF Christina who ends up needing Wyatt’s help. When a frantic Christina goes to Wyatt to ask her to convince Mer not to quit therapy, she lets it slip that she thinks Meredith and Derek will never work out, and the oh-so-quick Doctor calmly says that the idea of losing Meredith to Derek must be incredibly painful for her. To which Chris replies, “You’re a terrible shrink!” Call her what you want Yang but we all know she’s right on the money.

Callie/Erica: Okay so despite the fact that they literally had less than two minutes of airtime in total, what we got was gold! I honestly think these two couldn’t get any cuter…and hotter! They’re taking things almost painfully slowly but I think it’s necessary and definitely gives me hope that this won’t be another fly-by-night couple. Already you can see the effects they have on each other as we see ‘Attila the Hahn’ slowly shed her defensive armour and more and more of the real Erica emerge, even in her interactions with Yang. She also gets adorably flustered and kind of upset when she realizes Mark knows about her and Callie, but Callie simply tells her that Mark is her ‘person’, and she refuses to give him up as a friend. I love how Callie’s grown since her relationship with George and has learned that she doesn’t have to give up pieces of herself to be in a successful relationship. Still the highlight of this episode for them would have to be Erica’s admission of jealousy: “I think I just hate him because…he’s seen you naked”. Well said Erica! Get ready Calliope because this ballsy blonde is about to rock your world!

Last but not least poor Bailey still doesn’t have a proper storyline to call her own. She was brilliant as usual: sassy, sweet and freaking hilarious but she definitely still needs more screentime! Maybe her and her hubby will work things out or maybe *gasp* she’ll get a new love interest! No matter what happens I can guarantee it’ll be an absolute pleasure to watch! This. Woman. Is. Gold.

All in all, I was absolutely thrilled to have back that same warm and fuzzy feeling Grey’s used to give me way back in the day. This show is back on the track to greatness and I only wish seven days didn’t take so damn long to pass! Episode 5.04 is called “Brave New World” and from the promos looks to be bringing on the funny and the sexy in a way that only Grey’s Anatomy could! You won’t want to miss it!
